New beginnings. New possibilities.

UMass President Marty Meehan and President Joe Biden

Inauguration Day has always represented new beginnings and new possibilities for our still relatively young nation.

During my time in Congress, I came to know Joe Biden as a person of integrity, faith, and empathy. While many aspects of this day are sobering reminders about the immense challenges that our country faces, I find cause for hope in the character and life experiences of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

I believe President Biden understands the gravity of this moment and, as promised during the campaign, is committed to being a “bridge to a new generation of leaders.” He made history in his choice of Vice President Harris and has appointed the most diverse cabinet in U.S. history — one that finally looks like America. This is something to celebrate.

I remain optimistic about our nation’s future because I am one of the lucky few who have had a front row seat to witness the future leaders being educated at our colleges and universities. These young citizens comprise the most diverse, best educated, and least prejudiced generation in our history. Their leadership and active citizenship is needed more than ever, and I hope will challenge us all to aim higher in pursuit of a more perfect union.
